Draft Conference Proceedings

There has been a very detailed response to the request for papers. At the time of collating this draft there were still some papers awaited.

This file contains all the papers in order of the first author's family name.

Presentations, Workshops and Discussions: IACSS09 Opportunities

In September we are going to have lots of people meet each other for the first time in a remarkable venue in Canberra, Australia. Some presenters will be at the start of their professional career whilst others are acknowledged world leaders in their field.

We will have lots of ways to communicate at the conference and the aim is to make IACSS09 a rich social learning experience. Recently Doug Johnson has been writing about conference… Continue

Open and Connected Communities of Practice in Computer Science in Sport

Some weeks ago Larry Katz and Christoph Igel sent out a call for contributions to a special journal issue of the International Journal of Computer Science in Sport (IJCSS). Larry and Christoph observe that “many new and exciting programs are being developed in the areas of multimedia and elearning with the Internet as one of the main sources for distribution”. They add that “we are interested in papers that explore the innovative use of these tools and their effectiveness in improving learning a… Continue

Hi Keith, thanks. IACSS09 has been quite enlightening for me. Being a new player in the sport sector I am slowly gathering insight into the variety of issues in front of the partipants. I look forward to learning more and hopefully provide more openness in our IT capability in the future.

Hey Peter

There's some really interesting discussion about Talent and expertise at going on at the moment. One of really interesting distinctions people like Gladwell make when discussing outside his book is the significance not just of the evaluation of 'talent' but of the role the 'selectors' take. For example, its very easy for a general manager to draft a player with 'plenty of upside' because the fans can see that, and know that by the time the selection doesn't work out, its so long ago everyone has forgotten. Another favourite of mine is when teams throw out 3 years of stats and evaluations in competition because someone 'blew us away with their workout'.

My last question is: would teams be better off dumping their 'Scouting Departments' and just picking the players based on the ESPN website, BUT, spending all the scouting department money on making sure they had the absolute best 'teachers of young talent' they could buy?

Keith - happy to see this site come up! Have you read "Talent Code" by Dan Coyle? One of the recent books to hit the popular media on expertise and deliberate practice (the others being Gladwell's Outliers and Geoff Colvin's Talent is Overrated). Good stuff! Would love to discuss on this forum!

Hi Keith,

The day after IACSS, there is a conference in Sydney aimed at the Young Statisticians branch of the Statistics Society of Australia and we are looking for one more keynote speaker. Previous talks that have been given on Sport related Statistics have been well received, so I thought it would be good if there is someone attending IACSS that would be interested in a trip to Sydney afterwards. We have funds to cover domestic flights, meals and accommodation.

If you could advertise this, or if you have anyone in mind, it would be helpful if you could put them onto me for further discussion. Thanks,

Karl

Great! I am hoping to develop an unconference feel to the program too so lots of opportunities for break outs.

Delighted to be in touch, Darren.
